With Hurricane Ike wreaking in Texas, Barack Obama has canceled his appearance on tonight’s Saturday Night Live/SNL. Barack Obama felt it was not appropriate to make the SNL guest appearance due to the destruction in Texas. Lorne Michaels had issued a statement Friday about the tone of SNL, saying “If it’s [the hurricane] serious, it will change everything for us. The tone of the show will shift, and it would be inappropriate for the senator to do if it looks in any way like it’s going to be a tragedy.” (more…)

Barack Obama to Cancel SNL Appearance Due to Hurricane Ike

Barack Obama has cancelled a guest appearance on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live because of Hurricane Ike, which made landfall in Texas Friday night. “If it’s serious, it will change everything for us,” SNL creator-producer Lorne Michaels told Politico Friday, before Obama had cancelled. “The tone of the show will shift, and it would be inappropriate for the senator to do if it looks in any way like it’s going to be a tragedy,” Michaels explained. The Democratic presidential nominee has also decided to scale back campaigning and instead focus on responding to the hurricane. “Obama offered to do whatever he can to help, including using the Obama website to raise funds for relief efforts,” spokeswoman Linda Douglass told the AFP

Barack Obama is really making the rounds - last night, a stop at David Letterman’s desk , and Saturday, he’ll appear on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live. Michael Phelps will host the season opener of SNL on September 13. An Obama campaign spokesperson told People.com, “The details of the sketch are still being worked out.”
